Article

C3 Collaborating for Health invites you to attend our first International Breakfast Seminar in 2013, The science and art of NCD prevention: the role of business, given by Dr Derek Yach, senior vice president of The Vitality Institute. The seminar will take place on Tuesday 22 January at the House of St Barnabas in Soho.

Dr Yach has spearheaded several major efforts to improve global health. He helped place tobacco control, nutrition and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and heart disease prominently on the agenda of governments, non-governmental organisations and the private sector. At this breakfast seminar, he will be talking about society’s failure to prioritise the prevention of NCDs, his experience of working to bring prevention up the agenda, and current plans to fill the evidence gap and tackle the growing epidemic of NCDs.

As a former executive director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Yach led the development of WHO’s first global health treaty (the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control), and the development of the Global Strategy on Diet and Physical Activity. Dr Yach has served as PepsiCo’s senior vice president of global health and agriculture policy, he was the head of global health at the Rockefeller Foundation, and has been professor of public health and head of the Division of Global Health at Yale University.

From 2013, Dr Derek Yach will be heading the new The Vitality Institute, ‘a multi-disciplinary thought leadership organisation tasked with advancing knowledge about the evolving science and art of prevention and health promotion to build healthier societies’. The Vitality Group is a member of the South African company Discovery Holdings Ltd. Vitality aims to change lifestyles that reduce healthcare costs, both in the short run and long term, by rewarding members for addressing their specific health issues.

The seminar will be held at the House of St Barnabas, 1 Greek Street, Soho, London, W1D 4NQ (please use the Manette Street entrance MAP), on Tuesday 22 January 2013, from 8.30am – 10.00am. Breakfast is available from 8.00am.
