The role of the media and wider communications in improving health and healthcare
Article
Our event in April was on a slightly different topic – the media and wider communications.
We were delighted to hear from Shaun Lintern, Health Editor of The Sunday Times, Rob Checketts, Strategic Adviser with Executive Responsibility for Communications and Engagement, NHS England and Ravi Gurumurthy, CEO of Nesta
The session covered four broad areas:
- Behavioural messaging – how to influence health related behaviours, improving health status, tackling mis-trust, ensuring effective communications
- Classic news stories – these are increasingly delivered through social media which challenges consistency and rigour. The conversation focused on a strong sense of desire for openness; share the positives as well as the challenges.
- Management communications – ensuring a coherent narrative, being clear on the rationale for any change, creating a social movement within an organisation focused on improvement
- Balance – the importance of senior leadership supporting their staff in getting positive news out about extraordinary NHS achievements to balance the negative news
