Transforming care through the use of technology

Article

In March we were delighted to welcome Devi Shetty and Jim Easton to the Cambridge Health Network.

Devi is a world renowned cardiac surgeon who, after training at Guy’s Hospital, moved back to India with the ambition of building a cardiac centre providing high quality, efficient care to allow far greater access to care. Jim is Executive Chair at Practice Plus Group (PPG) – a UK based private surgical provider.

Over the last 30 plus years he has continued to evolve Narayana to be the largest provider of cardiac care in the world – providing the equivalent of over half of all cardiac care in England. He has ruthlessly ensured efficient and effective processes throughout, continually challenging traditional ways of working and, in so doing, has kept the cost of a CABG to the £1,250 it was in 1990. Increasingly Narayana has built and adopted technology solutions allowing them to continue to meet their ambition of income/wealth not being a determinant of access to high quality care.

Narayana has recently invested in PPG and is bringing their same focus on tech-enabled operational excellence to what was already an efficient provider.  PPG has similarly adopted robust management practices to everything from its back office services to procurement to theatre scheduling to ensure high quality care at lower costs than those typically achieved in the NHS.

The discussion was inspiring and energising. We look forward to seeing how the partnership develops.
